Resveratrol

Resveratrol

What are the origins of resveratrol extracts?

Scientific Name: Resveratrol is a natural compound found in a variety of plants, including the skins of grapes, berries, and peanuts. It is not derived from a specific plant species, but rather occurs as a phytoalexin - a substance produced by plants as a defense mechanism against pathogens.

Plant sources: Resveratrol is most abundant in the skins of grapes, especially red grapes. It is also found in other fruits such as blueberries and cranberries, as well as in peanuts and certain medicinal plants such as Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum).

Geographic distribution: The cultivation of resveratrol-rich plants is widespread in various regions of the world. Grapes, for example, are grown in vineyards throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia, and other parts of the world suitable for viticulture. Japanese knotweed, an important source of resveratrol, is native to East Asia but has been naturalized in several countries.

Extraction and Production: Resveratrol extracts are typically obtained through a process in which the plant material is crushed and solvents or other extraction methods are used to isolate and concentrate the compound. The extracted resveratrol can then be further purified and used in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and dietary supplements.

What are the skin benefits of resveratrol?

  1. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant.

The oxidation process induced by external aggressions damages our cells without them being able to control it. Most of our wrinkles are the result of this oxidative stress, which leads to a decrease in collagen production.

  1. Is Resveratrol an anti-aging ingredient?

Yes, Resveratrol increases collagen production:

- It firms the skin by stimulating the activity of youth proteins.

- It reshapes facial contours by stimulating elastin production and collagen synthesis.

- It smoothes the complexion by increasing the natural production of hyaluronic acid.

  1. Resveratrol has a strong anti-inflammatory power, allowing it to improve redness. Inflammation dilates the blood vessels in the skin and promotes the formation of new blood vessels. That's why it's important not to irritate the skin when it's prone to redness.
  1. Resveratrol is also thought to have an effect on hyperpigmentation by acting on the tyrosinase enzyme involved in melanin synthesis.
  1. Resveratrol also reduces acne by targeting the Cutibacterium bacteria.

What is resveratrol used for? (not just cosmetics)

Resveratrol has received considerable attention for its potential health benefits. Beyond cosmetics, here are some of the uses of resveratrol:

  1. Dietary Supplements: Resveratrol is commonly used as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties. It is believed to have potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular support, and potential anti-aging properties.
  1. Research and Medical Applications: Resveratrol is the subject of extensive research for its potential therapeutic properties. Studies have examined its effects on several health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. However, it's important to note that more research is needed to fully understand and confirm these potential benefits.
  1. Skin care and cosmeceuticals: Resveratrol's antioxidant properties make it a popular ingredient in skin care products. It is believed to protect the skin from environmental damage, help reduce signs of aging, and improve overall skin health.
  1. Agricultural applications: Resveratrol has also been studied for its potential agricultural applications. It has been studied for its ability to enhance plant defenses against pathogens, pests, and environmental stresses.

It's important to note that while resveratrol shows promise in several areas, more research is needed to fully understand its effects and determine optimal dosages for specific applications. As with any supplement or ingredient, it's recommended that you consult with a healthcare professional or expert before using resveratrol for specific purposes.
